Foreword

According to Eliphas Levi in his monumental work Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie (Dogma and Ritual of High Magic) published in English as Transcendental Magic, the art of divination is "the exercise of divine power, and the realization of divine knowledge. It is the priesthood of the Magus." Divination is "the science of the prophets."

That the word "divination" comes from the Latin term for deity is indicative of the theurgical belief that knowledge gained through intuition, inspiration, or revelation has a divine source. Automatically, we as spiritual seekers tend to give such knowledge a special regard. And yet, the subject of divination often raises as many questions as it answers: What method of divination is best? How does the process of divination work? Can a divination always be trusted?

This first volume of Basics of Magic: The Best of the Golden Dawn Journal attempts to answer these questions and more. Subsequent issues will cover a variety of topics that are of interest to Hermetic students in general and Golden Dawn magicians in particular.
